Docs: splitmarker tips and techniques

I did my first track session using Trackmaster 1.6 on 5th October on my motorcycle at Rockingham National. I tried to do lots of research but missed this. Setting up splitmarkers are described in the documentation but not how to choose or optimise them.

I am guessing here but should your first mark be on the Start/Finish line. It seems that most of the tracks in the UK (world?) are setup so that you enter and leave the pits either side of that line? That's what I did anyway.

I then went round the track putting markers where would make sense (to me at least) such as that the beginning and end of straight or bend sequence- and my particular hang-up- either side of a hairpin. This happened to be the last point as along that straight was the Start/Finish line. Does this description make sense? Does this setup make sense?

I haven't got pockets on my leathers or a bracket I trust to put the phone in so I started the session and wedged the phone between two lengths of pipe insulation and stuck it under the seat. On a bike track day you all line up at the end of the pits. As a result when you start a session you miss the first lap as you haven't passed the 1st point.

You then go round enjoying the time until the end of your session or a red flag happens. If it happens during the first half of If the session you leave the track and line up in the pit lane until it's good to go. If you get flagged in the second half of - it's over, you are off the track back to your garage

Basically once you head from your garage- that's it- the phone is under the seat and you are staying there until you get back after it's all over. This makes it tricky to start and stop everything. Also a couple of sessions I forgot to stop the phone at all so have over 40 minute laps when they are normally 1:50ish.

While I've been typing this I just had an idea. Would it be possible to have a pre-stage or taxi'ing area that would start/stop recording as you go through them but not during a normal lap?

Sorry for the rambling

You are setting your split markers correctly. Yes, if you place your 1st split marker on the start/finish then your first and last laps will be throw aways if you start from the pits. I think typically your first and last laps are warm and cool down laps anyhow.

As far as where to put the phone, your location is fine. Make sure to set Pocket Mode to ON, so that you can lock the screen and not accidentally trigger a stop.

An automatic stopping mechanism would be a good thing to have. The first that comes to mind is simply a session time limit. My track sessions typically don't last longer than 25 minutes, so I could set a limit for that and Trackmaster would stop at the 25 minute mark. Do you think that would work for you?

Yes it would- much more sensible! The sessions are officially 20 minutes but with a little slop for Red Flags 25 would work well here too.

Would recording start automatically once the start/finish line was passed again? I'm sure I'd forget to start it again if it needed tending to.

Pocket mode didn't exist on my last trackday- When I came out of airplane mode (I didn't tweet then) I got your announcement for 1.7.
