GPS accuracy error - only showed up after first session
1/22/10 8:21 AM
Here's a weird one. I used Trackmaster this past weekend on the lake in Adirondack Park, far away from any interference and indeed the accuracy in the first session was spot-on (all the laps overlay perfectly).

Oddly, though, before I pulled out for the second session I started the app and got the dreaded warning about GPS accuracy being insufficient. I thought it'd go away once I started moving but driving up to the grid didn't fix it and the error stayed up during the entire second session. After the race I rebooted the phone and launched the app again and still got the GPS accuracy error.

Any ideas what could be causing this? This is on a Droid running the stock ROM. I don't believe it was an error with Trackmaster, rather something to do with the phone, but I couldn't figure out what the issue was. Could it be in any way related to not having a signal?

Thanks,

-tim

The GPS warning dialog should appear at the end of a session if the accuracy was poor. You can simply click OK on the dialog and it will disappear. It won't appear again until the end of your next session if the accuracy is poor again. The way you describe your situation below is that the dialog wouldn't go away?

As far as GPS accuracy, are you mounting your device in a location (like glovebox or inside center console) that would reduce the GPS signal? I may tweak this accuracy algorithm a bit. Currently, if a single sample has poor accuracy, I'll flag it. I may do multiple points.

I got no error or problem during the first session. It was some time before the second session that the dialog showed up.

I don't know how to get past the message. It's "GPS not ready. Please wait to start logging." With the big caution sign and a listing of accuracy of 328 ft. It's what I see if I'm inside a building. There's no OK button.

The Droid was mounted on the windshield using the car mount. I left it there between the first and second sessions IIRC.

I understand the issue now. You're stuck on the first GPS warning before you start a session. I think this is a problem with the GPS receiver. What should happen is that the GPS should acquire enough satellites and improve accuracy enough for the warning to go away. A Google search on Droid GPS issues returns a lot of problems. But it seems to be hit and miss with people.

The only thing I can think of doing is to leave the logger screen and then come back to it. This will power down the GPS and power it up again. This should reset the GPS and have it try again to acquire satellites.

Thanks, yeah, I figured it was something to do with the phone, but didn't know if anyone knew of any suggestions.

Will poke around and try to find something.

Turns out the problem was airplane mode. I apparently put it in airplane mode after the first session last week and didn't put 2 and 2 together.

Curiously in airplane mode it still shows the GPS active icon at the top of the screen, which made me think that GPS wasn't deactivated. But, I verified this week that even though the icon is there GPS doesn't work in airplane mode.

So, turned that back off and the app worked fine -- though it constantly searching for signal sucked down my battery in no time. Good thing I had a spare...

Thanks for following up. This does make sense now. Most of these smartphones now use something called Assisted-GPS (A-GPS). It uses the cellular network to help the GPS acquire satellites. It greatly speeds up acquisition time. Without it, the GPS can take much longer to acquire enough satellites.
