Camber Gauge and Corner Weights apps released!
Camber Gauge and Corner Weights apps released!

Use Camber Gauge to measure your camber at the track. Make quick adjustments to your suspension and record your values. Corner Weights allows you to calculate your weight distribution so that you can improve your handling. It calculates your cross weights, percentages and target values. Both apps will be integrated into the upcoming Trackmaster Setup activity.

Setup integration allows transferring of values from Camber Gauge and Corner Weights apps:

What kind of accuracy are you getting on the camber gauge?

On the Nexus One, +/- 0.3. Make sure to calibrate at the same level/ground as the car and also ensure the phone is vertical and steady. You may notice some slight fluctuations depending on the sensitivity of your phone's accelerometer.

Awesome, Jeff, can't wait to try these out.

When you say they'll be integrated, do you mean they'll be launched from within Track Master, or will pull in values from these other apps?

They'll be integrated into the Setup activity. When you go to enter your camber values, you can jump to the Camber Gauge app from the Setup activity directly and then it will automatically transfer your recorded values back after you have made your measurements. For Corner Weights, it works similarly. When you're in Setup, you can jump to Corner Weights and your values will automatically be transferred and calculated. BTW, corner weights are added in the next version v2.1. v2.1 will be released next week.

I just recently tried this on a Android 2.1 OTA updated Verizon Motorola Droid with issues.

I would calilbrate it and then try to use it. On ground with top edge facing the wheel. Then back of phone flush with wheel. It would update the camber angle sometimes and other times it wouldn't. None of the update/changed camber values were accurate at all, closest was ~8deg off.

I'm wondering if this was some glitch just for me. I refunded/uninstalled that night. But wouldn't mind buying it again to try if we could work out those issues. I'd like to have it to keep track of camber in case things slip and I need to adjust on the fly.

Thanks,
Dave

It sounds like you are calibrating correctly. The camber gauge relies on the gyro (accelerometer + compass) in order to calculate the angle. It's possible the phone hardware is introducing some error. An additional variable is the placement on the flat part of the wheel. This assumes that flat part of the wheel is parallel to the plane of the wheel. If this is off, this will introduce additional error as well.

I've noticed similar discrepancies with my Droid as well. I think we all know that the sensors on the Droid are pretty picky ... I hoped it wouldn't cause issue with this app since it such a great use of the device's capabilities for us data-driven gear heads. I tried to measure camber on my race wheels, which do have a flat surface at the hub area, and got measurements up to -16º ... My camber is around -2.6º.

Did yesterday's update address this issue? I'm still getting some strange readings. I can calibrate and get 90º, then put it on a vertical wall and get -6º to -3º.

No changes were made to the measurement algorithm. I could attempt to add a "fudge factor", but then that is likely to cause issues with other folks and other phones. Unfortunately, this is one of the challenges of developing software that runs on many different phones (HTC, Moto, Sony, LG, etc). Each has slightly different hardware and accuracy.

I understand. Do you think it might help if there were an option to calibrate vertically? That way you're only moving from the calibration position a few degrees rather than nearly 90 degrees? Just thinking of this because it calibrates dead on.

I'm looking to add an additional "self-adjustment" toggle +/- as another calibration. It reports say 5 degrees. But you know it should be 3 degrees. Then you can adjust it to match 3 degrees. Next time you measure again, it will have that additional "fudge factor". That would be constant and specific to your phone.

So, you feel like it's a consistent offset, and not random based on the sensitivity of the sensor?

It's a guess right now. I'll need to do more testing with more than one Droid to narrow it down.
