G-Meter showing vertical line
5/10/10 10:55 AM
I've noticed that the G-Meter isn't working on my Droid any longer. This is from yesterday's session:

It was not recorded at a drag strip emoticon

Perhaps this is a bug that was fixed in 2.2, but I thought I'd post this up anyhow. I did verify in another app that the accelerometer in the phone is working.

I'll check this out. Could you send the Google Earth format for this session?

Mine does this as well. I purchased the app a few days ago and have a track day tomorrow.

-- The G meter will work once in a while but for most sessions it does not work.

Any suggestions?

Just a couple questions:
  • How are you mounting your phone? Is it mounted flat?
  • What is the orientation mode set to? (Horizontal, Vertical, Sensor)

For mine, at least, the phone is strapped to my arm inside my driving suit. Orientation is in sensor mode.

Jeff,

It is installed flat on its back / pointing (forward) in my center console - secured down so it doesn't move around /with pocket mode ON and screen turned off / locked to save battery.

Orientation is (and always has been so far )set to "Sensor."

So with your arm position on the wheel in your kart or car, the phone would be close to being flat on its back?

Also,

If I export a session to Excel the lateral_accel column is pretty much all 0.00 except for a the two rows which show: .01 and .02

If I export a session to Excel, which logged the lateral_accel, every row has a much higher value up to .70. (This was just testing in a parking lot...over and over and over :-) )

I tried rebooting the phone, tried putting the phone in air plane mode...but have not yet found a way to make the G meter consistently to recored the lateral acceleration.

I'm wondering if it's being caused by the Droid being flat. Can you try a different mounting orientation?

No, it's strapped inline with my arm, with the top toward my shoulder. I am then reaching forward to the wheel. So, it's more or less at an angle.

I will try mounting it on its side tomorrow.

Any other suggestions?

I had it mounted two different ways and out of 8 sessions on track this weekend the G-Meter did not work even once.

This is really strange. I test with a Droid and I can't seem to reproduce this in various orientations. To make sure there isn't anything wrong with your Droid, can you download the free app 'Accelerometer Values'? Hit Start on it and rotate in various orientations and make sure you can max out the values (5+) for X, Y, and Z.

Adrian,

One more thing: Are you using bluetooth GPS or the internal GPS?

I tried the app and was able to max out all three. I also paired my external GPS to see if that had any effect, but was still able to max out all three.

I think I know what's going on. When you lock the screen, it's shutting down the accelerometer. With Pocket Mode set to ON, it is not supposed to do this, but it looks like the Droid is doing this anyhow. I'll need to do some investigation to see if there is a workaround. I'm not sure if this is possible, but if you run with the screen ON (pocket mode OFF), this should keep the accelerometer active.

^^^ That could very well be it. I'll give a go with pocket mode OFF and the screen NOT locked and see what happens.

Also, no external Bluetooth GPS for me, and as of this morning I'm running v2.3.

Jeff,

I tried it once around my house with pocket mode OFF and the screen ON and sure enough it logged the lateral G forces.
