First time out w/ TrackMaster a success
First time out w/ TrackMaster a success

Really please with TrackMaster. My first time out with it and it worked really well.

Got to ECR and unloaded. Ran up to the pit wall to put out my timing beacon for my XT Racing timer. While I was on the pit wall, I ran TM created a new Split file, hit the locate button and moved the marker out on to the track. After that all I had to do was secure the phone in my bikes tail section hit the start button and go ride my session. When I got back to the pit touch the screen and the data was saved.

Really nice.

I'll post the actual data in a bit. I'm still messing around with it.

Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to seeing your data.

Finally got to look at the data in Google Earth. Not too bad. I like how it is organized. Each lap is split off in to its own set so you can compare them pretty easily.

I've attached the start finish for ECR (ECRStartFinish20100713_120630.kmz)

And my 2nd session for the day.

*UPDATE* In case you are wondering: turn 11 (lower right corner of the image) was wet so everybody was basically parking it on the way in.

Now I need to figure out how to mount my droid to my triple or somewhere else where I can see it.

Things I'd love to see added:
A motorcycle oriented setup page and a log book feature.

I think the mc setup would be as simple as adding a radio button for the vehicle to indicate whether it is a car or motorcycle. Then just chop off the unnecassary wheels, shocks and brakes for the mc mode.

The other feature I'd love is the ability to add split markers after the fact. For instance, I'd like to be able to zoom in on turn 3, tap the screen on the entrance and tap the screen on the exit and see how much time elapsed between those points for all of my laps. Not a huge deal, but it would help when trying to fix a line in a particular turn.

Overall: best deal for a trackwhore ever. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for sharing your data. A motorcycle setup (and karting) is under setup and will actually work just as you describe. You'll have the option to choose what type of setup. The post-session split is also great idea.

By the way I came across your thread on NTSBA. People talk a lot about 1Hz vs 5Hz vs 100Hz and automatically assume that higher is better. This isn't always the case and it depends. If you are talking about lap and split times only, there isn't too much of a difference since Trackmaster interpolates between samples to a very high accuracy. You will see very little difference with your lap and split time accuracy between 1Hz and 5Hz (or higher).

A higher rate does provide finer data resolution for map and data analysis. Autocross and karting run on fast, tight courses and would benefit from a 5Hz GPS. But depending on the speeds and course you may not need the higher resolution.

Ultimately, Trackmaster provide a ton of features and high accuracy for a bargain price. That Starlane GPS is $750. Buy Trackmaster instead and save that money for track day fees; because it's about the track time and not expensive gear.

Notice the discussion stopped when I requested references for where Starlane claims to sample GPS at 100hz? They don't. They sample the engine stuff at that rate.

Anyway, I just bought the GPS service and have it paired to my QStarz 1000P. Had to run one of their programs to configure the device to sample at 5hz. Once that was done, it hooked up to your program pretty easily. Very nice.

What stinks is that I went through the trouble of building a crash box to hold the phone in the bike's tail section so that I could touch the screen to start and stop recording. Now I don't need it. Now the process is:
1) turn on the starz box
2) start TM, make sure it is connected to the starz box
3) start the session.
4) lock phone and drop in pocket.
5) go ride.

I'll give it a go on Saturday.

Did you know Trackmaster will speak your lap and split times to you? I find it helps by telling me on track whether my lap times are improving instead of waiting until the session is finished. That way you're not completely blind to your lap times when your phone is in your pocket. I have a bluetooth headset, but the standard headset will work just as well if your pocket is close enough to your head.

I have an XT Racing timer so I can see my times w/o any trouble. Which by the way: XT and TM agree on my times.
